A liquid filter with a cylindrical filter cartridge (6) where liquid moves in a radially inward flowing direction and, in particular, an air vent (7,8) is provided to remove air introduced by the rising liquid. This consists of a tightly fitting cap (7) on the centre-line, and the upper end, of the central core (11). The vent hole (8) has a very small diameter which offers little resistance to air but considerable resistance to liquid. The vented air is released through a channel (14) in the core.
