In a gear-box, incorporated, e.g. in an agricultural implement such as a cultivator or grass cutter, and comprising meshing bevel gears 48, 68 respectively mounted on a shaft 37 and an output shaft 57, the shaft 37 extends across the adjacent end of the output shaft and is splined at 43, 44 for its bevel gear 48 to be assembled thereon in either of two positions diametrically opposed in respect of the output shaft bevel gear 68 to provide change of output shaft rotational direction. Further, the bevel gears 48, 68 are dimensioned so as to be interchangeable for ratio inversion therethrough. A pair of preceding stage pick-off spur gears 35, 50 are splined respectively on an input shaft 23 and a shaft 37. The gears 35, 50 also are interchangeable for ratio inversion therethrough, and may be replaced by a further pair of interchangeable pick-off spur gears 53, 54 stowed on spigots 51, 52 on the inside of a removable cover 17 and acting to prevent the gears 35, 50 from sliding off their respective splines 36, 45. That splined portion of the shaft 37 not mounting the bevel gear 48 mounts a lubricating oil paddle 46a. By removing the cover 17, secured by wing screws 18, and an end cover 40, the shaft 37 may be slidden out of the casing for interchange of the bevel gear and paddle thereon for output shaft rotation reversal. The input shaft 23 is driven from a tractor P.T.O. shaft through an overload-slipping coupling 31. A dipstick 22 depends from an oil filler plug 21 provided in a casing cover 19. The oil level 74 is arranged to be below the opening closed by the removable cover 17. As shown, the output shaft 57 is journalled in a cylindrical casing 56 welded to a base-plate 12, and has welded thereto a flange 58 screw-pinned to, e.g. the cutting blade of a rotary grass mower. The cylindrical casing 56 has a deflector 76 guiding outflowing oil when a plug 75 is removed. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the output shaft (57a) is mounted horizontally by a ball bearing (59a) in a cylindrical casing (56a) which is interchangeable with a cover 81 on the opposite side of the gear-box. The cover 81 may carry a spare ball bearing (59a). |
