The invention comprises the preparation of alkylene sulphide polymers by the catalytic polymerization of an alkylene sulphide in the presence of as a molecular weight controlling agent at least one compound containing active hydrogen in the form of OH, SH, NH 2 , NH, CONH 2 or COOH in addition to any such compound used in forming the catalyst. Suitable agents are water, hydrogen sulphide, mono and dihydric alcohols, amines, amides, mercaptans, mercapto-ethanol and carboxylic acids. They may be used in amounts of 0À005 to 10 per cent by weight of monomer. The monomer may consist of one or more alkylene sulphides or a mixture thereof with minor amounts of other copolymerizable monomers e.g. olefins, conjugated and unconjugated dienes, vinyl derivates (acrylates &c.), alkylene oxides and imines and certain aldehydes and ethers. Specified alkylene sulphides are:-ethylene, propylene, 1-2-butylene, 2,3-butylene, isobutylene, cyclohexene, vinyl cyclohexane episulphide; vinyl cyclohexene episulphide, styrene sulphide, paramethyl styrene episulphide, butadiene mono episulphide, 2-benzyl thiirane; 1,2-epoxy 3,4-epithiobutane, allyl thioglycidyl ether, thioglycidyl acrylates and thioglycidyl alkacrylates. The preferred catalysts are based on Group II B metals, particularly reaction products of R 2 M, where R is an alkyl or aryl group and M is either zinc, cadmium or mercury, with active hydrogen compounds as well as elemental oxygen or sulphur, carbonyl sulphide and carbon disulphide. The reaction may be effected in the vapour phase, in bulk or in an inert solvent e.g. containing no active hydrogen, suitable temperatures being 20 to 120‹ C. In the examples given the Molecular Weights are indicated by melt index data, determined on polymers stabilized with a mixture of (H 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 C 6 H 4 ) 2 O or (HOCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NH with zinc oxide or partially hydrolysed zinc chloride.
