A gas turbine unit for supplying compressed air to the starter turbines 2 of jet propulsion engines 1 comprises a gas generator consisting of a centrifugal compressor 16, combustion chamber 19 and a turbine 14, and a free turbine 13 fed by the gas generator and driving a centrifugal compressor 11 which can supply air to the turbines 2. The fuel supply to combustion chamber 19 is controlled by a fuel pump and governor unit 26 in response to the speed of the gas generator shaft 15. An electric motor 25 is provided for starting the gas generator. The air connection between compressor 11 and starter turbines 2 includes a non-return valve 7 and valves 3. A supply point 4 is provided for compressed air from an external source. |
