Process for oxidn. of a harmful substance causing chemical oxygen demand (COD) or biological oxygen demand (BOD) in contaminated effluent or waste water uses dichromate dissolved in a strong acid, esp. H3PO4 or H2SO4, as an oxidising agent with simultaneous electrolysis at a potential difference that is somewhat greater than the oxidn. potential of the conversion of Cr(III) to Cr(VI), to cause electrolytic re-oxidn. of the Cr(III) formed into dichromate. An appts. for carrying out the process is also claimed.
