Testing aerobic biodegrading of test materials

To test the aerobic biodegrading of test materials, by registering the total CO2 prodn. in the closed system, the infra-red absorption of the gases developed in the system is measured, without gas extn. for measurement. The CO2 concn. is controlled to a given value, or value range. If a threshold value is exceeded in the CO2 concn., part of the CO2 is extracted through a CO2 absorber (17), and extracted from the system, to be replaced with another gas or gas mixt., and especially oxygen. Also claimed is an appts. with a reaction vessel (10) contg. the substance (11) being tested. The system has an infra-red absorption measurement probe (13) and a micro-pump (16) for the recirculation of gas within the system. A CO2 absorber (17) takes extracted gas through a twin-path valve (18) under control, which is part of the recirculation circuit.
