Controlled self-ignition in automobile diesel engines

The self-ignition process of IC engines in automobiles and in industrial applications has the compression controlled by a pressure relief valve. The surplus air/fuel mixture is trapped in an intermediate tank and returned to the combustion chamber later. The pressure level for the valve is preset mechanically and then adjusted using a computer. The steep pressure rise after self ignition is captured by a sprung cylinder head and/or a sprung piston.
