The lighting unit is mounted on the upper rear corner of the inside of the door. The unit is fastened to the door frame, or to the glass for a pillarless hardtop car. The unit pivots as the door opens and closes. The unit illuminates the climbing-out and in regions as well as doubling up as a reading lamp or a warning lamp for overtaking traffic and traffic coming the other way. Door contacts ensure that it automatically switches on when the door is opened. A symbol panel is also integrated into the lamp, lit from behind. This lighting is switched on along with the parking lamps or dimmed headlamps.
