A catalyst (10) assembly has an outer casing (12) containing spirally-wound layers of smooth and wavy metal sheets (76, 78), which may have the S- or SM-shaped configuration, and which form the body (16) of the catalyst substrate. An outer sheet (18) forms the casing around the circumference of the substrate (16). To the ends of this casing, grid supports (30, 32) are connected. In the new construction, the catalyst is composed of a pair of coaxial substrates (14, 16) with an encircling, second casing element (20) interposed. Also claimed is the procedure to manufacture the catalyst structure as described.
