Polyalkenylsuccinic acid derivs. are produced by reacting oligo- or poly-olefins, with an ave. mol.wt. of 500-10000, with maleic acid derivs. of formula (I) at high temps. in the presence of effective amts. of radical catchers in the gas phase and in the liquid phase of the reacting system (where, R and R' = OH, lower alkyl or halogen; or together form an O atom). Also claimed are ash-free dispersants and polymers obtd. by cocondensing (I) with (II) boric acid or polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides and (III) polyamines. At least 5 mol.% (I) are present as imide or amide structures with (II) and (III).
