Preparing a mineralised filler for hydraulically bound building elements using pre-comminuted and metal-free polymeric and organic waste and/or scrap materials comprises (i) further comminuting the starting materials in a mill and/or agglomerator; (ii) in a mixer, blending the starting materials in relative proportions depending upon the quality requirements and properties of the composite material to be made; (iii) mixing the blended starting material in a mineralisation unit with aq. alkali silicate soln. so the individual particles of the material are completely wetted by and covered with the silicate soln.; (iv) sepg. excess aq. silicate soln. in a dewatering station to a low moisture content, and treating the prod. with an acid reaction gas to cause carbonisation of the silicate soln. coating the filler particles; and (v) using the resulting mineralised and carbonised filler in a composite material.
