An inner thin-walled cylindrical flat-bottomed cup-shaped tank 3, Fig. 1, containing cold liquefied gas, e.g., methane is spaced from an outer tank 1 by load bearing heat insulation material 2, e.g. polyurethane, and is suspended at its rim 13 by vertically displaceable means, e.g., a weighted balance lever 14, Fig. 6, secured to the cover 7 of the outer tank; the inner tank having a loose fitting cover 10 suspended from the outer cover 7 and the cylindrical wall of the inner tank having vertically extending expansion folds 4, Fig. 2. At ambient temperature the inner tank is spaced from insulation 2, on cooling the tank the base 6 shrinks and the wall is displaced further from the insulation and on filling the inner tank the bottom and sides thereof are formed into contact with the insulation resulting in lowering of the rim 13 against the displaceable suspension means. In a modification the latter may comprise a coil spring or a weighted rope passing over a pulley. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,109,255. |
