[Also in Division C4] Compounds of the formula wherein the tetrahydroquinoline ring may carry further substituents, R 7 is alkylene and R 8 and R 9 are alkyl (substituted or unsubstituted), cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radicals are prepared by reacting Specified compounds obtained are N - (N<SP>1</SP> - methyl, methane sulphonamido ethyl) - 1,2,3,4- tetrahydro - 2,2,4,7 - tetramethyl quinoline and the corresponding N - (N<SP>1</SP> - hydroxyethyl, methane sulphonamidoethyl) -, N - (N<SP>1</SP> - pnitro phenyl, methane sulphonamido ethyl)-, N - (N<SP>1</SP> - methyl, p - toluene sulphonamido ethyl) -, N - (N<SP>1</SP> - 2 - pyrrolidinonyl ethyl, p - toluene sulphonamido ethyl) -, and N - (N<SP>1</SP>- methoxy propyl, p - toluene sulphonamido ethyl) - derivatives. These compounds are converted to aldehydes of formula by treatment with POCl 3 and dimethyl formamide.
