FIELD: timing and orientation equipment. SUBSTANCE: proposed sundial-compass makes it possible to determine time by the Sun which may be in any position and to orient automatically with reference to cardinal points. Depending on geographic position of observer either graduation of scales of face-plate is conducted in advance in agreement with latitude and longitude or combined scale is used. Sundial-compass incorporates sealed vessel partially filled with liquid, float filled with gas, two-pole magnet, faceplate with scale to record time intervals. Sealed vessel has transparent dome-shaped cover, is made of magnetically permeable material and has internal cavity of cylindrical shape where barrel-like float is placed. Faceplate in the form of circles of hour angles, direct ascensions and cardinal points with scales is located on face surface of float. Two-pole magnet in the form of magnetic needle is positioned in center of this surface. Needle is hinged in center to axle made fast to dome of transparent cover and is directed perpendicularly to base of cylindrical cavity of vessel. EFFECT: enhanced functional reliability and accuracy. |
