PURPOSE: To subject the subject compound to N-alkylation in readily purifiable with slight by-product at a high yield to obtain an N-alkyl-substituted material useful as a raw material of a medical substance, an agrichemical or a dye, etc., by reacting a specific heteroaromatic amine with alcohol by using a ruthenium complex catalyst. CONSTITUTION: (A) A heteroaromatic amine having at least one amino group on a cyclic carbon atom in a six-membered ring [e.g. a compound of the formula (A, B, D and E are each C or N but not simultaneously N; X is a 1-20C alkyl, a 2-20C alkenyl, a 1-10C alkoxy, a halogen, a 1-12C monoalkylamino, a 2-20C dialkylaino or a phenyl; m is 0-3; n is 1-3; m+n <=5)] is reacted with (B) an alcohol in the presence of (C) a ruthenium complex catalyst to subject the component A to N-alkylation. |
