PURPOSE: To realize the weld bead judgment that the bead is excellent when the minimum stable region is present, and the bead is defective when the minimum stable region is absent by judging weather or not the minimum stable region is present where the variance is minimized from a plurality of variance calculating results, and the variance is stable in the reference direction. CONSTITUTION: When the cross section shape of the weld bead is normal, it is clarified that the region where the standard deviationσ1 of the melting width D is minimized and stable is present, and in the region, the penetration depth D1 can be estimated with excellent accuracy when the bead height D2 is measured. The penetration depth D1 can be estimated when the bead height D2 capable being measured in a non-destructive manner is used as the alternative characteristics in the minimum stable region of the variance. The region in the range from the upper end E to the lower part along Y-axis, and where the Y-value is e.g. 1.3-2.3mm, is the minimum stable region of the variance is obtained, and the penetration depth D1 is D-D2 when the bead height D2 is measured. Acceptance/rejection of the weld bead can be judged from the cross section shape.
