PURPOSE: To provide a handwritten symbol recognition system which can accurately and easily recognize a handwritten symbol. CONSTITUTION: Reference points are generated one after another by thinning out a redundant dot array from an inputted dot array and the directions of vectors connecting the reference points are quantized in 8 directions, and a direction transition pattern generating means 23 generates patterns which shift in four directions from the 8 directions and the features of the patterns are compared with the contents of a feature dictionary storage means 33 to judge the kind of the inputted handwritten symbol. A redundant vector is inserted in a position where deformation resulting from writer's habit is predicted so that one dictionary symbol includes plural predicted deformation patterns as handwriting input patterns, and an omittable flag is added thereto and stored in a feature dictionary storage means 33, so that the compression of the dictionary capacity and the shortening of a retrieval time are enabled. |
