PURPOSE: To make it possible to produce an optical isolator without degrading extinction performance by assembling an unmagnetized magnetic material into a cylinder by solder, etc., and applying a magnetic field thereon to form a magnet, then assembling the constituting members of the optical isolator. CONSTITUTION: A joining agent (low melting glass) 7 is inserted between, for example, the samarium-cobalt magnet 2 and a Faraday rotator 3 consisting of bismuth-substd. rare earth garnet and is heated to join both parts 2, 3 and thereafter, the joined body is built and fixed into a stainless steel cylindrical body 1. A polarizer 5 and analyzer 6 consisting of polarizing glass dispersed with silver on the surfaces and a 'Kovarβglass holder 4 are joined by a joining agent 7 consisting of low melting glass having the further lower m.p., by which the holder 4 is fixed to both ends of the cylinder 1. The magnetic field is applied on the magnet 2 before or after the fixation of the polarizing plate at the time of the assembling, by which the magnetic field intensity of the magnet is made higher than the satd. magnetic field intensity or above and the rotating angle of the Faraday rotator 3 is kept at 45 deg.. The extinction performance of the optical isolator is thus improved.
