PURPOSE: To provide an instrument for an electric vehicle capable of reducing the load of an on-vehicle battery and improving the efficiency of the vehicle by normally using a special purpose chargeable power source as the drive source of an instrument. CONSTITUTION: An instrument 1 for an electric vehicle is disposed at the suitable installing position of the vehicle to display various information. A computing processor 3 inputs the detection signal from a sensor 2 installed at the position to be detected of the vehicle, computes it and outputs a computing signal. A display unit 4 displays the information in response to the value of the computing signal. A chargeable power source 5 exclusively supplies power to the processor 3 and the unit 4. A voltage monitor 6 outputs a drop signal if the voltage of the power source 5 is a predetermined value or lower. A switching unit 8 switches the power supply to the processor 3 and the unit 4 from the power source 5 to an on-vehicle battery 7 according to the drop signal.
