PURPOSE: To execute compression and image processing of image data efficiently by writing attribute data of an image in the unit of blocks discriminated by an attribute discrimination processing section to an area of a low-order bit of prescribed mean value information and gradation width index. CONSTITUTION: A CPU 61 applies coding processing to image data of an original expressed in an L*a*b* color representation system by using the GBTC system and the result is once stored in a compression image memory 610. Then the attribute of an image of 4×4 picture element block to which data belong based on the coded data, and the determined attribute data based on the discrimination result are written in an area of low-order bits for data of prescribed mean value information and gradation width index not effecting on decoding processing. Then data stored in the memory 610 are read and the attribute of the image is identified based on the attribute data in 1-bit written in the low-order bits and AE processing and edit/processing are stored in the memory 610 based on the attribute of the image. Then coded data are read from the memory 610 and decoded into 256 gradation data and restored again to RGB image data.
