A process for the prodn. of a 3-dimensionally formable carpet structure, useful as floor carpet, in a continuous feed system, the upper side of the combination consisting of a non- woven base fabric (A) with tufted top fabric (B) or a "needle punched non-woven", backed with a heavy layer (C) contg. mineral fillers and pref. a cushion layer, e.g. of polyurethane (PU) foam, layer (C) being firmly attached to fabric (C) with an amorphous polyolefin (I). The process comprises (a) unwinding (B) from a first take-off reel, coating it with (I) on the side facing layer (C) and applying heat so as to form a heat-activated adhesive layer for bonding (B) with (C) and binding in the tufted filaments projecting from fabric (A), (b) applying layer (C) to the adhesive-coated fabric (B) and heating, and (c) cooling and smoothing the combination in a calender and then rolling it up on a take-up reel or transferring it for further processing. Also claimed is a carpet structure obtd. by this process.
