An exercise appliance (10) for conditioning the abdominal muscles of an individual (20) includes a structure presenting a resiliently yieldable contact surface which provides a restoring force against a force applied thereto, sized and shaped to be at least partially fittable in the space formed between a support surface (11) and a static lordotic curve of a lumbar spine (12) of an individual (20) positioned with a remaining portion of the back of the individual (20) in contact with the support surface (11). By so positioning the resiliently yieldable portion of the appliance (10), attempts by the individual (20) to straighten the lumbar curvature by contraction of the abdominal muscles forces the lumbar spine (12) to flatten against the counter-force provided by the appliance (10), conditioning the muscles responsible for the action, including the rectus abdominous (14).
