The stability control for a vehicle monitors the slew moment and the longitudinal force on the vehicle as well as the vehicle dynamic parameters. The measured values are compared with optimum reference values of slew moment and longitudinal force and the wheel brakes selectively operated to approach the optimum parameters and hence the optimum stability. The system discriminates between oversteer and understeer to alter the mode of braking control. For oversteer the braking effect is biased towards the rear brakes and vice versa for understeer.
