Method for selective sepn. of materials utilises phagocytes (PG; e.g. granulocytes or monocytes/macrophages) to remove particulate components and macromolecules from liquids (e.g. biological fluids such as plasma, cell culture media or cell cultures) by endocytosis. The method involves contacting the liq. with PG, to remove contaminants (e.g. bacterial lipopolysaccharides (endotoxins) and/or particles such as bacteria, fungi or viruses) recognised by PG, followed by removal of PG from the liq. Also claimed is an appts. for the method, in which the liq. (e.g. blood plasma) is subjected to a sepn. process (e.g. filtration or centrifugation) to remove particles (e.g. blood cells) with specific characteristics (e.g. size, wt., compsn. or surface structure/properties). The liq. is then contacted with PG in a reactor space to remove components as above followed by sepn. of PG, e.g. by filtration or centrifugation.
