The invention relates to an electrochemical cell which has an anode, a membrane, and a cathode, where one side of the anode is disposed in contact with one side of the membrane and the cathode is disposed in contact with the other side of the membrane. A current bus is disposed on the other side of the anode. A current distributor which distributes current by electronic conduction is disposed between the current bus and the electrode, which can be either anode or cathode. The current distributor is made of a conductive carbonaceous material, and more preferably, non-porous, carbonaceous material selected from the group consisting of anode carbon, re-impregnated graphite and glassy carbon. The current distributor thus provides a barrier between the current bus and the reactant and product of the cell. This is especially important in aggressive environments, such as hydrogen chloride. Thus, the current distributor of the present invention is particularly useful in a cell for converting anhydrous hydrogen halide directly to essentially dry halogen gas, such as anhydrous hydrogen chloride to chlorine gas, or it can be used in a cell for converting aqueous reactants. |
