A washer SQUID (C) is attached to a dielectric resonator (8) of a defined geometric form, such as a cylinder or cube, such that at least one frequency mode is coupled to the SQUID. The cylindrical resonator shown has a diameter of 8 mm and a height of 4 mm. It is of great permittivity and stands on a base plate (A) of smaller permittivity, which serves to further concentrate the energy in the resonator. The coupling between the resonator and the transmission wires of the read-out electronics is effected through antennae to each side of, but close to, the resonator. Leads of 50 ohms can be used. First experimental results for 20x20 micrometre washer loops show a voltage-flow-transformation coefficient of more than 300 microvolts/ phi zero
