An apparatus (1) for plucking feathers from a bird. The apparatus includes a pair of motor driven (11) contra-rotating rollers (20 and 22) mounted in a housing defining a nip region (16) therebetween. A spacer in the form of two forward projecting rollers (23 and 24) provided in front of the contra-rotating rollers (20, 22) prevents the carcass of the bird from contacting the driven rollers. Suction is applied by way of a suction chamber (7) to draw feathers toward the nip region (16) and to transport plucked feathers by way of a pipe (6) to a disposal bin.
