Combination display unit for motor vehicles

The display unit (1) has a primary (2) and at least one secondary (3) display element for representing and displaying different operating parameters. The user is visually notified of when a critical state is reached by changing the visual appearance of the secondary display elements. In normal operation at least one region of the primary display element indicating the speed has a raised basic brightness and at least one region of a secondary display element is lit by the basic illumination. When a critical state is reached, the associated secondary display element is additionally illuminated with increased intensity.
