A communication apparatus for a printer 10 comprises a detachable adapter 51 rotatably mounting an infra-red radiation receiving element 61 behind a filter 65. The radiation receiving element has a predetermined radiation receiving angle and receives a set of data from a radiation transmitting element (33,fig 2) so that the printer performs a printing operation in accordance with the received set of data. The radiation receiving element can be rotated so that the radiation transmitting element comes within the radiation receiving angle of the radiation receiving element. A corresponding transmitter (33, fig 2) may be mounted on a personal computer (31, fig 2).
