Continuous prepn. of d,l-menthol comprises catalytic hydrogenation of cpds. with the menthane C skeleton and which contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond, and an oxygen substituent in the 3-position, and/or catalytic stereoisomerism of menthol in the presence of hydrogen. The catalyst is carrier-free, and consists of compressed powders of oxides or hydroxides of cobalt, manganese and alkaline earth metals, and opt. one or more oxides or hydroxides of VB and/or VIB metals.
