High power amplifier appts. for long distance optical telecommunication

The appts. includes time proportional frequency modulation, a compact source of stretched impulses (10), a pre-amplifier (20), and a pump light laser diode (50). Also provided is a power amplifier stage to which the stretched impulses are delivered. The amplifier stage is formed of a double sheathed light conductor (30a) and the pump diode. An optical element (60a) transfers the stretched pulses and the diode pump light to an input side of the light conductor. The amplified light output from the light conductor is coupled to a compressor, e.g. a time proportional frequency modulated Bragg grating.
