Image scanning format converter suitable for a high definition television system

The apparatus receives first and second signals at first and second inputs which are to be conveyed to an output path. The first and second signals exhibit first and second formats respectively. An output processor provides the output signal to the output path which exhibits the first or second format compatible with the output path requirements. An automatic scan format converter automatically provides an active first or second signal with the predetermined compatible format to the output processor. The converter automatically converts the active signal format to the predetermined format if the active signal does not exhibit the predetermined format. The active signal is passed to the output processor without format conversion if it exhibits the predetermined format. A first conversion path is provided between input and output networks for converting a progressive format signal to an interlaced format signal. A second conversion path between the input and output networks converts an interlaced format signal to a progressive format signal. A bypass path conveys a signal without conversion between the input and output networks.
