An internal shoe drum brake comprises a pair of brake shoes 16, 18 which are operatively connected to axially aligned plungers 12, 14 slidably mounted in a housing 10. The plungers 12, 14 are urged apart by a wedge actuator assembly 45 which includes a rod 46 having an integral wedge 47, a floating roller carrier 48 and rollers 49. The outer end of the rod 46 is part spherical and co-operates with a socket 43 in a rod 42 of a fluid pressure motor 31. In the disassembled state of the brake the carrier 48 is held in its position about the wedge 47 by a spring 54 acting between a fixed washer 53 and a floating washer 52, the floating washer 52 engaging the carrier. The motor 31 is provided with a rigid hollow mounting tube 38 having an external thread 39 which co-operates with a threaded bore 27 of the housing 10. In the assembled state of the brake, the end face 40 of the tube 38 abuts a shoulder 28 of the housing 10, the housing end tube being locked against relative disassembling rotation by a lock ring 41 comprising a slotted lip 68. In a modification the end of the housing 10 is slotted and the lip of the lock ring bears on the outer surface of the housing (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The plunger 12 may be provided with an automatic wear adjuster 25 or a manually operated adjuster 24. |
