FIELD: organic chemistry, production of perfumes. SUBSTANCE: method is carried out by single-step transformation of styrene oxide into b-phenylethyl alcohol. Liquid phase hydrogenation of styrene oxide takes place at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of catalyst. Supported nickel catalyst being modified by palladium and containing ferrum is used as mentioned above catalyst. Nickel content in said catalyst is 0.08-0.5 mass %, ferrum content in it being not more 0.3 mass %, ratio of nickel and palladium in said catalyst is 1:(1.5-2.0) respectively. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of water, ratio of styrene oxide and water being 85:15. EFFECT: improves selectivity of the method. 4 cl
