PURPOSE: To obtain a novelα-ω-dihydroxy compound which has a fluorine- substituted biphenylene structure in its molecule, shows liquid crystal properties, and can give a high-molecular material excellent in flow properties and moldability. CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by the formula: HO-R<1> -O-A-O-R<1> -OH [A is a divalent aromatic group of the formula (X is H, F where at least two of X are F); R<1> is a 2-10C alkylene], for example, 3,4'-difluorobis-(6- hydroxyhexyloxy)biphenyl. This dihydroxy compound is obtained, for example, by heating a mixture of 1 mole of biphenyl-4,4'-diol of HO-A-OH and 1.5-3 moles of anω-haloalcohol of the formula: HO-R<1> -Y (Y is halogen), particularly anω-chloroalcohol in a reaction solvent in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide, and effecting polycondensation reaction through dehydrhalogenation in the presence of a catalyst such as potassium iodide.
