A magneto-optical recording medium that exhibits an excellent ability to achieve flying stability for the associated magnetic head during recording operations and can effectively prevent adsorption of the magnetic head on its protective layer, includes a substrate, a recording layer with a magneto-optical recording film, and a protective layer, which are arranged in this order, wherein that surface of the protective layer which is not opposed to the recording layer has a surface roughness of not less than 0.1 mu m but not more than 0.85 mu m as measured in terms of center line average height.
