PURPOSE: To execute the head restoring operation corresponding to the state of an individual ink jet cartridge by providing a recessed part of which the bottom surface is coated with luminous paint emitting light by the light emitted by the optical detection means provided to an ink jet recording apparatus. CONSTITUTION: In an ink jet cartridge 101 wherein an ink jet recording head and an ink tank are integrally formed, a cylindrical recessed part 202 is formed to the side end surface of the recording head and the bottom surface of the recessed part 202 is coated with luminous paint 201. An optical detection element 203 is fixed and arranged in opposed relation to the bottom surface of the recessed part 202 on the main scanning direction along which the ink jet cartridge 101 mounted on a carriage is moved in the vicinity of one end part on the side of the apparatus main body. The luminous paint 201 is irradiated with the light from the light emitting part 204 of the optical detection element 203 to emit light and this light is detected by a light detection part 205. Therefore, restoring operation can be executed by the head corresponding to the state of the individual ink jet cartridge 101.
