PURPOSE: To improve graininess of the intermediate tone part and to improve reproducibility of gradation of the highlight part by forming dots by making the duty ratio of light emitting time to a dot relatively small and giving a dot forming angle. CONSTITUTION: Image data from an image signal processing part are input into an FIFO memory 202 through an interface part 200 and gradation data of images for a specified number of lines in the main scanning direction are stored. The data in this memory 202 are transferred to aγcorrecting part 204 and the level of light emission obtd. by correcting the input data is transferred into a semiconductor laser driver 212 through a D/A converting part 208, an amplifying circuit 209 and a drive I/O210 and this is light-emitted. In addition, in this instance, a printer control part 206 outputs correction data so as to perform light exposure by making the duty ratio of light emission time at most 100% on a specified number of dots in the main scanning direction and different light emission pattern data are repeatedly read out in the sub- scanning direction from the memory 202 to perform light exposure.
