PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal composition having a low threshold voltage by mixing compounds (I) to (IV) represented by specified formulas with each other in a specified mixing ratio. CONSTITUTION: Compounds (I) to (IV) represented by formulas I to IV (wherein R<1> to R<6> are each 1-10C alkyl or the like; R<7> to R<9> are each 2-8C alkenyl or the like; R<10> is 1-10C alkoxy or the like; R<11> and R<12> are each 1-10C alkyl; Q<1> to Q<5> are each H or F; A<1> is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or the like; A<2> and A<3> are each 1,4-phenylene or the like; B is pyrimidine-2,5-diyl or the like; C, D, E, G and J are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or the like; Z<1> and Z<2> are each -COO or the like; Z<3> is a single bond or the like; Z<4> is -C≡C or the like; Z<5> is -CH=CH- or the like; and Z<6> is -C≡C- or the like) are mixed with each other to obtain a nematic liquid crystal composition comprising 3-40wt.% compound I, 5-70wt.% compound II, 5-70wt.% compound III and at most 50wt.% compound IV.
