Hollow plastic, pref. polypropylene, holder having slots in its periphery and contg. ceramic, pref. silicon nitride, granules mixed together with magnets is used in a washing machine to reduce the amt. of washing powder required to produce a clean wash of soiled articles. The plastic holder is pref. conical in form and, through the slots, allows the water and washing powder/fluid to come into contact with the silicon nitride granules and the magnets to clean and soften the water during the normal washing cycle of the machine.
