Process for detecting the presence of potato virus "Y" (PVY). The process comprises (a) the immobilization of macromolecular structures related to the pathogen on a solid substrate, (b) the synthesis of cDNAs, (c) enzyme amplification of the synthesized cDNAs using specific starters, (d) enzyme digestion of the products resulting from amplification with the restriction enzymes Hinfl, Ddel, EcoRV, Rsal and Taql, (e) fractionation of the products resulting from enzyme digestion and (f) analysis of the said fractions. This process has applications in agriculture as it provides useful information to determine the presence of strains of PVY which are regarded as quarantine strains which prohibit the marketing of products contaminated with these strains.
