Prodn. of 2-cyano-3-alkoxy-alkenonitriles or -alkenoate esters of formula R3O(R4)C=C(CN)R4 (I) comprises reacting R1CH1CN (II) with R4C(OR3)3 (III) in the presence of an aluminosilicate/metal salt catalyst. R1 = CN or COOR2; R2 and R3 = 1-4C alkyl; R4 = H or 1-4C alkyl. The catalyst pref. comprises montmorillonite and a Zn salt and is used in an amt. of 0.05-10 g per mole of (II). The (III):(II) molar ratio is 1.5-10:1. The reaction is effected at a temp. between 80 deg C and reflux temp., opt. in the presence of a carboxylic acid of formula R5COOH, where R5 = H or 1-4C alkyl, esp. Me.
