The microscope has a free-standing support stand with a horizontal arm supporting the microscope (13) at its free end. The control system for the microscope is divided into a number of individual modules (14, 15, 16, 17,18) each corresponding to a respective control function. The modules (14, 15, 16, 17, 18) each have a control stage and an associated power source. Pref. the modules (14, 15, 16, 17, 18) are stacked together to act as the upright for the stand with each brought into operation by a respective switch, with a further switch coupling the assembled module group to the current source.
