A laundry drier comprises a laundry drum 2, a belt 3 for driving the drum, an electric motor 4 for driving the belt by way of a pinion 5 around which the belt is looped, and a belt tensioning device. The belt tensioning device comprises a roller 9 engaging one belt run 7, a spring-biased plunger 11 carrying the roller, and a fixedly located guide 14 rectilinearly guiding the plunger 11 to be longitudinally movable substantially parallel to the other one 8 of the belt runs. The plunger may be biased by a compression spring (as shown) or by a tension spring.
