A method and an apparatus for driving an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display for accomplishing an economical gradation display method by controlling the state of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal for each frame without increasing power consumption. According to the present invention, a write period into pixels comprises at least two scanning periods, and each scanning period comprises a plurality of frame periods. The frames are set so that a frame in which the antiferroelectric liquid crystal is under a first ferroelectric state and another frame in which the crystal is under a second ferroelectric state do not exist together within the same scanning period.
