Picture data evaluation method

In a first step (S200) a first picture data frame is produced from a picture data frame with a predetermined resolution greater than the definition of the first frame. The process is repeated for a second picture data frame whose definition is worse or coarser than the first picture data frame (S300). The movement in the second picture data frame is evaluated to produce a first estimate (S600). Subsequently the movement in the first picture data frame is evaluated on the basis of this estimate, in order to produce a second estimate (S700). Finally, the movement in the picture data frame with the specified resolution is evaluated on the basis of the second estimate (S800).
