The measuring device provides a high contrast image of the powder particles (60) on the surface of the printed item (12) using a measuring light beam (52) at an acute angle to the item surface, provided by an illumination unit (16). An optical measuring system (72) is positioned with its optical axis perpendicular to the illuminated surface, with an image converter (78) providing an image of the latter. The image provided by the image converter is evaluated via a data processor, to determine the number of powder particles on the surface of the printed item and the particle size.
