The abrasion measurement includes subdividing the profile surface of the tyre over its extent in several measuring sections, and performing a topographic measurement by recording at least three phase-shifted strip projections for the production of an interference pattern. A topographic measurement of each measuring section is performed in addition to the phase-shift method, according to the Gray-code method. The ambiguity of the height values is eliminated by comparison of the height values from the phase-shift method, and the height associations from the Gray-code method. The height values are compared with a reference contour, and calibrated absolute height values of the profile surface are determined through subtraction and stored. The tyre is rotated over several measuring sections, over which measurements are repeated until the tyre is measured over his full extent.
