An electrode wire (20) is drawn from a feed reel (22), led via guide rollers (24-30) to a machining section (32) and finally wound onto a winding reel (40). The electrode wire (20) is guided in such a way that it remains in the same plane perpendicular to the axis when wound onto the winding reel (40) and when drawn from the feed reel (22). Both reels (22, 40) are mounted on a common carrier (50) which can move on a line parallel to the axes of the reels (22, 40). A measurement device (70) is arranged between the feed reel (22) and first guide roller (24) and measures deviations in the position of the electrode wire (20) from a predetermined position. The carrier (50) is linked to a slide drive (60) which corrects deviations noted in the position of the electrode wire (20) unwinding from the wind-off reel (22) by axial displacement of the carrier (50) and thus ensures that the used electrode wire (20) is wound correctly onto the winding reel (40).
