A jaw assembly (12, 14) for an endoscopic bioptome includes a pair of opposed end effectors (44a, 44b) having resilient arms (50a, 50b) formed from a super-elastic metal. The distal ends of the resilient arms (50a, 50b) terminate in end effector jaw cups (46a, 46b) which are also preferably formed from super-elastic metal, while the proximal portions (51a, 51b) of the resilient arms (50a, 50b) include angled portions (52a, 52b) which urge the jaw cups (46a, 46b) away from each other. The jaw cups (46a, 46b) are brought together into a biting action by a cylinder (40) having a sharp distal edge (42) which moves relative to and over the arms (50a, 50b) of the end effectors (44a, 44b). As the resilient arms (50a, 50b) are formed from a super-elastic metal, they exhibit very high resiliency and durability even after numerous uses.
|
